Why You Need a Crack Pipe

By | 2016-07-30

If you don’t already own a crack pipe, stop reading this and go buy one. Hit up your local dealer, or order one from Amazon. Are you back now? Good.

Disc wheel adapter

A disc wheel adapter, commonly known as a crack pipe for fairly obvious reasons, is something no cyclist should go without. No disc wheel? No matter! The crack pipe will still come in handy.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever struggled with a too-short presta valve. Raise your other hand if you’ve ever been stuck without a presta valve adapter. Now all of you (and it’s probably everyone reading) keep ’em up, because you’re under arrest for lack of possession… of a crack pipe.

Bad joking aside, a crack pipe is an incredibly handy little doo-dad, and one that hardly takes up any space in a bike bag/jersey pocket. There’s been more than one occasion when a ride would have been ruined or never gotten started  without mine.

Valve too short for the pump head to lock on? Lock onto the crack pipe and pump away.

No presta fitting on a particular pump? The crack pipe swings both ways.

Long, fragile Vittoria stem? No need to clamp = less chance of breaking it.

All hype aside, the crack pipe is an incredibly handy little doodad, and one that hardly takes up any space in a bike bag/jersey pocket.  I bought mine expressly for use on my disc wheel, but it’s gotten far more use on regular rims and tires.  Buy one!  You won’t regret it.
